Afro-Audacity Animation

Afro-Audacity Animation is an animation company created by Elliot Marvin Sims that seeks to tell stories from an African American perspective. I’ve done some work on a sketch show for them, as well as The Companionship of Family, a short film project still in the works. It’s been a great time doing work with AAA, and I hope you check them out if you haven’t already. You can learn more about the company at their website here, or if you’re interested in seeing some of the projects, you can view them on the AAA YouTube channel here.

ABASS

A Black Animated Sketch Show, or ABASS, is a web comedy sketch series by AAA. I’ve gotten to work directly under company founder Elliot Sims while working on these episodes as a rough animator, and it’s been a blast getting to see these sketches come together.

Civil SuperFriends was the very first project I worked on with Afro-Audacity Animation, as well as the first episode of ABASS that ended up releasing. The episode is pretty openly spoofing the Super Friends television series from the 70s, itself an adaptation of DC’s Justice League of America. The show is pretty famous for a couple of things, such as introducing wider audiences to a number of DC’s characters, being extremely campy, and having pretty mediocre animation in its best moments. It was a lot of fun working on the episode, especially since I had the challenge of trying to go against my instincts as an animator to match the dated animation of Super Friends, and even then, several moments ended up getting toned down by cleanup artists to look more stilted.

Topped Off Fade was a project where the size of the team was really noticeable. There were a lot of people helping put this episode together, and as a result, a lot of shots that would be seen one after another were being primarily put together by completely different artists. Because of this, there was a lot of discussion while making it about trying to keep the style and character designs as consistent as possible, and how we could go about that.
